A heart palpitation is a fluttering sensation in the chest, usually followed by a feeling that your heart is pounding and racing. Heart palpitations are generally unpleasant, and are felt most often in the chest, throat or neck. You may sense an irregular pulse, like your heart has "skipped a beat," so to speak. Other people describe heart palpitations as feeling like "the bottom has dropped out" of their chest. Individuals who are most likely to experience heart palpitations include the following. Those who have heart disease when the palpitations begin Those who have significant risk factors for heart disease Those who have an abnormal heart valve Those who have an electrolyte abnormality like a low potassium level Sometimes palpitations are a symptom of thyroid problems or a heart condition known as a mitral valve prolapse. But in most cases, heart palpitations go away in a few moments with no physical after effects. But heart palpitations can be frightening they can feel like an an oncoming heart attack. You should call your doctor if your heart palpitations last longer than a few seconds at a time, or occur frequently.
