Gesamtkunstwerk, or "Total works of Art", is a phrase coined in 17th century Germany and made famous by Wagner. Wagner's seismic shift away from Italianate operatic tradition in favour of building a complete artistic universe. The audacious challenge of committing both books of Goethe's Faust to celluloid and canvas, led Philipp Humm to build his modern narrative across multiple disciplines and to create a Gesamtkunstwerk. It entails a 108 minute feature art film starring Steven Berkoff, 200 artworks (fine art photos, bronze sculptures, pencil drawings, watercolour and oil paintings) and an illustrated novella. The film was released in December 2019 and was critically acclaimed. Humm would pause in between filming The Last Faust and work in between multiple studios to gather his reference photos. These photographs would either be turned into edits and paintings. But most of the time it was his sketches that Humm would base his Fine Art photographs from in order to marry all the disciplines together. Even though his production The Last Faust is an independent piece of work, the artworks and ideas that Humm produced to go alongside the film, all come together to form this "total work of art". .
